New gutters need a sound attachment surface. If the fascia behind the existing system is deteriorated, covering it with new gutters does not repair the underlying condition. Have the roof edge assessed and agree on how hidden damage will be handled before installation begins.
What you can document without climbing
From the ground, look for staining, peeling finish, visible gaps, sagging gutter runs, loose attachments, or displaced trim. These observations justify an inspection but do not prove that the wood is rotten. Paint failure and discoloration can have several causes, and the surface behind the gutter may not be visible.
Photograph each area and note whether water is spilling over the front or appearing behind the gutter during rain. Include nearby roof-wall intersections. Do not probe the roof edge from a ladder or pull on loose gutter sections to test them.
Check why the surface became wet
The objective is to restore a reliable water path, not only replace a stained board. Ask whether the problem involves gutter overflow, a leaking connection, roof-edge flashing, or another roof or wall detail. Work outside the gutter scope may need to be addressed by the appropriate roofing or building professional.
Drip-edge and kick-out flashing serve different locations. Roof-edge flashing helps direct water at the eave, while kick-out flashing diverts runoff away from a roof-wall intersection and toward the gutter. Ask the assessor to identify the affected detail rather than accepting “needs sealant” as a complete explanation.
Put hidden-condition decisions in writing
| Before work | What to agree |
|---|---|
| Existing fascia assessment | What is visible now and what can only be checked after removal? |
| Repair responsibility | Who handles carpentry, flashing, paint, and any roofing work? |
| Hidden deterioration | How will photos, revised scope, pricing, and your approval be documented? |
| Installation readiness | What must be complete before the new gutters are attached? |
Check the result against the agreed scope
Keep before-and-after photographs and the approved change order when repairs are needed. At completion, ask the installer to explain attachment, gutter alignment, downspout routing, and any roof-edge items excluded from the work. This makes the handoff clearer if another contractor must complete a related task.
Gutter guards, a new finish, or a larger gutter do not by themselves resolve damaged supporting material. Read repair versus replacement and use the estimate checklist to make the preparation work explicit.
